choosing between male and female guinea pigs isn’t about which is “better” it’s about understanding their natural behaviours so you can build the happiest, most harmonious herd. At THE Squeak Life, where every squeak has a story, we celebrate the unique strengths of both boars and sows.

💙 Boars: Bold, Affectionate, and Full of Character

Boars (male guinea pigs) are often the comedians of the guinea pig world. They tend to have big, expressive personalities and can be wonderfully affectionate with their humans. Many are confident, curious explorers who settle into relaxed, cuddly routines once they feel secure.

Boars absolutely need companionship, but bonding them can take more planning. They’re more prone to dominance behaviours rumbling, mounting, chasing, and the occasional disagreement. Adult boars or strong personalities may need extra space and careful introductions to find the right match. They can also require a little more hygiene support, such as grease gland cleaning.

Final verdict:

Boars make awesome pets for those who enjoy lively personalities and are happy to support healthy, well‑matched pair or group dynamics.

💖 Sows: Gentle, Social, and Group‑Friendly

Sows (female guinea pigs) often shine in pairs and herds. They typically have smoother group dynamics, with less intense dominance behaviour than many boars. Many sows are calm, sweet, and gentle once trust is built making them a lovely choice for multi‑pig homes.

That said, sows can still have plenty of personality. Some are bossy or territorial, and hormonal moods during heat cycles can stir up squabbles. Older females are also at risk of ovarian cysts, and some sows are naturally more sensitive or shy.

Final verdict:

Sows are often a wonderful choice for calm companionship and smoother group living.
