Bunny-sitting isn’t just a one-off favor, it’s a chance to share love and care with a rabbit who depends on routine and gentle companionship. I’ve been helping my friend with her rabbit for quite some time now, and it’s become part of my regular rhythm. This isn’t my first time around bunnies either, I’ve had three of my own over the last 30 years, so rabbit care is something I know well and truly enjoy.

🥕 Diet & Daily Care

- Unlimited hay is the foundation of every rabbit’s diet. It keeps their teeth healthy and their digestion moving.

- Fresh water daily I always use a sturdy ceramic bowl, as bottles can drip or clog.

- Pellets and veggies I stick to the rabbit’s usual food to avoid tummy upsets. Rabbits thrive on consistency.

🏠 Safe & Cozy Environment

- I keep his space set up just as his owner does, so he feels secure.

- Hazards like cords, plants, and small gaps are blocked off, rabbits are curious explorers!

- A clean litter tray and soft bedding make his environment comfortable and familiar.

🐾 Grooming & Claw Care

Because I help my friend regularly, I also take care of his claws. Every 4–6 weeks, I trim them to keep him comfortable and prevent snagging.

- I use small pet nail clippers and gently trim just the tip.

- Avoiding the quick (the pink vein inside the claw) is essential, it keeps the process safe and painless.

- Regular trims mean he can hop around happily without discomfort.

This is something I’ve done with my own rabbits too, so it feels natural to include it in his care routine.

🐇 Companionship & Play

- Rabbits are prey animals, so I let him approach me rather than forcing cuddles.

- He loves willow balls and cardboard tunnels, so I rotate toys to keep him busy.

- Sitting quietly nearby helps build trust sometimes the best bonding is simply being present.

🩺 Health Watch

Over the years, I’ve learned that rabbits hide illness well. That’s why I always keep an eye out for:

- Changes in appetite or droppings

- Lethargy or hiding more than usual

- Signs of discomfort when moving

If anything seems off, I’d contact his vet straight away.

🌸 Final Thoughts

Helping my friend with her rabbit has been such a joy, and it reminds me of the years I spent caring for my own three bunnies. Rabbits may be quiet companions, but they thrive on routine, gentle care, and a watchful eye. Whether it’s topping up hay, offering a favorite toy, or trimming claws every few weeks, these small acts add up to a happy, healthy rabbit.

So, if you’re ever asked to bunny-sit, embrace it! With patience and consistency, you’ll discover just how rewarding rabbit care can be.
