How to Make a Guinea Pig Cuddle Cup at Home

Cuddle cups are one of those small luxuries that make a big difference in a guinea pig’s world. They’re soft, cosy, washable, and perfect for snoozing, loafing, or curling up during lap time. And the best part is: you can absolutely make one yourself at home.
I’ve sewn several over the years, and they’ve become one of my favourite DIY projects — simple enough for beginners, but endlessly customisable. Plus, there’s something incredibly special about watching your pig settle into something you made with your own hands.
Why Make Your Own Cuddle Cup?
• Choose your own fabrics — match your pig’s personality or your home décor
• Budget-friendly — especially if you already have fleece or cotton in your stash
• Durable — homemade versions often outlast shop-bought ones
• Personal — nothing beats seeing your pig enjoy something you created
Where to Find the Best Patterns
There are plenty of patterns online, but my top recommendation is to search Etsy for Squeak Dreams sewing patterns. Their designs are:
• Clear
• Beginner-friendly
• Well-structured
• Supported by easy-to-follow YouTube tutorials
If you’re new to sewing, those videos make the whole process feel achievable and fun.
What You’ll Need
• Polar fleece (for the inside — soft and cosy)
• Cotton fabric (for the outside — structured and great for prints)
• Absorbent layer (Zorb, towelling, or wadding)
• Foam or wadding for structure
• Sewing machine (hand-sewing is possible but slow)
• Pins or clips
• Scissors
• Your chosen pattern
Tips From My Own Makes
• Use polar fleece on the inside — it creates that warm, nest-like interior guinea pigs adore
• Use cotton on the outside — it holds its shape well and lets you choose fun, bold designs
• Pre‑wash all fabrics — this prevents shrinking later on and helps the fleece start wicking moisture properly, keeping piggies warm, dry and cosy
• Clip, don’t pin, especially when working with fleece
• Topstitch the rim for a neat, professional finish
• Wash before use to fluff the fleece and remove any factory residue
• Expect your pig to immediately claim it — they always do
A Little Story About Bingo
One of my favourite makes will always be the cuddle cup I stitched for Bingo when she was younger. She was my tiny, curious helper back then — always inspecting the fabric piles and trying to sit on whatever piece I was cutting. When I finally finished that first proper cuddle cup and set it down, she climbed straight in as if she’d been waiting for it all along. She tucked her little feet underneath herself, did one satisfied shuffle, and gave me that proud, contented look only a guinea pig can give. That moment made every stitch worth it, and it’s still one of my sweetest memories from learning to sew for my herd.
Care & Cleaning
Cuddle cups are wonderfully low-maintenance:
- Shake out hay and poops daily
- Wash at 30–40°C with pet-safe detergent
- Avoid fabric softener (it reduces absorbency)
- Air dry or tumble on low
Final Thoughts
Making a cuddle cup is a lovely blend of creativity and practicality — a small project with a big payoff. Whether you’re sewing your first one or your fifteenth, it’s a beautiful way to add comfort to your guinea pig’s life while enjoying a bit of crafting yourself.
If you do make one, I’d love to see your piggies enjoying it. There’s nothing quite like that first little loaf.
